The newly inaugurated community green park in the Kandarpada area of Borivali West has become a major point of discussion among local residents. Spread across nearly three acres, the park has been designed as a multi-purpose public space aimed at promoting wellness, environmental sustainability, and social interaction. The project was officially opened on Thursday morning in the presence of municipal officials, local representatives, and citizen groups.
According to officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the park includes walking and jogging tracks, a children’s play zone, an open-air yoga deck, and shaded seating areas for senior citizens. Native trees and plants have been prioritised to support local biodiversity and reduce long-term maintenance costs. Solar-powered lights and rainwater harvesting systems have also been installed as part of the city’s sustainability initiative.

Citizen Focus Block – Why This Park Matters
Safe open space for children and senior citizens
Improved air quality and reduced heat in the locality
Encourages fitness and outdoor activities
Strengthens community bonding
Residents say the park has already begun changing daily routines. Morning walkers and yoga groups have started using the space from the first day, while families are visiting in the evenings. “Earlier, we had to travel at least two kilometres to find a decent open space. This park has come as a blessing,” said a local resident who has lived in the area for over 20 years. The project faced multiple delays in the past due to land disputes and funding issues. Construction finally began in mid-2024 after the land was cleared and allocated under the city’s open-space development plan. Civic officials claim that citizen feedback played a crucial role in shaping the final design, making it more inclusive and user-friendly.
Urban planners have welcomed the move, stating that such neighbourhood-level parks are essential for a densely populated city like Mumbai. Experts believe that small but well-maintained green spaces can significantly improve mental health, reduce pollution impact, and enhance overall quality of life.Local authorities have assured residents that regular maintenance, security personnel, and CCTV surveillance will be provided to keep the park safe and clean. There are also plans to host weekend cultural activities, fitness workshops, and environmental awareness programs in the coming months.
As Mumbai continues to expand vertically, the opening of this community green park is being seen as a positive reminder that sustainable urban development must keep people and nature at its core.
